The Plantations of Hilton Head Island

Island Plantations:

Hilton Head Plantation
Situated between the Intra-coastal Waterway and Port Royal Sound, this is one of the Island's largest residential Plantations. What was once an area that produced the world's finest Sea Island cotton is now a wonderfully pleasant relaxing community. Mary and I lived there for eleven (11)  years on Saltwind Way and enjoyed the privacy and security it had to offer. Miles of bike paths and the Dolphin Head recreation area directly on Port Royal Sound were our favorite amenities.

Port Royal Plantation
In 1861 President Lincoln decided that he would land over thirteen thousand federal troops on Hilton Head to set up his Department of the South. Port Royal was the chosen place to set up operations and blockade Southern Confederate ports. This is my favorite place on the Island to enjoy the magnificent beauty of a never crowded beach and look for artifacts of days gone by. A fine Union button was one days find and is a special part of my Civil War collection. This part of the Island seems special to the dolphins and pelicans and they put on quite a show feeding in the shallow waters.

Palmetto Dunes Plantation
What was once the home of the "North Carolina Hunt Club" is now a world class resort . It is also interesting to note that during World War II it was the site of a U.S. Marine training base. Palmetto Dunes has successfully blended a year round residential community and destination resort. In recent years Conde Nast Traveler Magazine has listed it as one of the best places to stay in the whole world.

Shipyard Plantation
If you are looking for top notch tennis you will find it at the Shipyard Racquet Club. The club is rated among the top tennis resorts in the country and brings players from around the world. Driving through Shipyard gives you the feeling of being on a true tropical Island. Palmetto trees, lakes and lagoons are everywhere giving safe haven to its abundant birds and wildlife. Check out the landscaped area if front of the oceanfront Crowne Plaza Resort for a real treat.

Sea Pines Plantation
Sea Pines Plantation will always be special to me because it is where I experienced my first Professional Golf Tournament. The MCI Classic, The Heritage of Golf known to the locals as "The Heritage". It is held each April in perfect weather conditions. This is really more than a golf tournament and is an Island "Event". Schools close, banks close, offices close and people party at the many hospitality houses. For many years I welcomed friends, clients and customers to the porch at my hospitality house to eat Low Country Joe's famous chicken wings and enjoy some good Southern Hospitality.

Wexford Plantation
Have a seventy five ft. boat and want to park it in your back yard? Wexfords the place. The unique lock system enables you to keep your vessel in a tide free environment. From its wonderful stone bridges to its magnificent clubhouse, Wexford is pure class. I have played a number of rounds on its manicured golf course and look forward to going back. Members never have to worry about a tee time. A wonderful sophisticated neighborhood.

Long Cove
If you like golf, you will love Long Cove. It is totally private and currently enjoys the reputation of having the number one rated golf course in South Carolina. I have always liked the clubhouse with its special Southern flavor.

Indigo Run
The golf club of Indigo Run has the distinction of being the first course designed by the team of Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus Jr. Most of the homes overlook the golf course, lakes and lagoons. This is one thousand twelve acres of beautiful South Carolina Low Country.

Off-Island Communities:

Windmill Harbor
Windmill Harbor is the first Plantation you see as you come off the bridge and enter the Island. It is the home of the South Carolina Yacht Club and has over two hundred fifty slips. I have always liked the Southern style clubhouse. The restaurant at the Club is exquisite and the first place I ever tasted roasted ostrich!

Spanish Wells
The next time you are on Hilton Head take a sunset cruise out of Shelter Cove Harbor and you will be able to experience the beauty of Spanish Wells. The captain will point out the wonderful homes complete with deep water docks. Some of the homes on the point have water views of Broad Creek on one side of the house and Calibogue Sound on the other "Wow".

Haig Point-Daufuskie Island
Only a short ferry ride on a private luxury ferry and you are in another world, Haig Point on the mystical Island of Daufuskie. Here you are in a place away from time and traffic. Haig Point is well known for its golf course that has hit the top one hundred list by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. But I find the real beauty of this special place in its buildings like the restored sea island mansion. It serves as a community gathering place where you can pick up your mail from old time mail slots. And I can not forget the restored 1872 lighthouse with its two charming bedrooms for visiting members and their guests. Mary and I have been members for the last five (5) years.

Moss Creek
As you go over the second bridge and leave the Island you will view, on the right, the wonderful plantation of Moss Creek. My first impression many years ago was one of living with the environment and nature. Moss Creek just "exudes" Low Country with its prairie like marshes, live oak trees and Spanish Moss. The golf course is a splendid tract that previously was on the LPGA Professional tour. Call me for a special tour with one of the owners.

Colleton River
Colleton River Plantation just happens to be situated on one of the most pristine waterways in the United States, the Colleton River. You can get a feel for the Plantation by taking Sawmill Creek Road off of 278 towards the community dock. From there you will see the view that many of the homeowners enjoy every day. I remember looking for arrowheads where the golf course now greets the river in an area the locals called "The Desert". Its hard to believe that many years ago a steel mill and a boat building plant were proposed to be built there.

Belfair Plantation
It was an early March day over fifteen years ago when I was introduced to the beauty and magical spell of the South Carolina Low Country. I drove slowly on what was then only two lanes. Mary and I stopped and admired a particular stand of live oaks lining an old dirt road. In my minds eye I could picture a splendid Southern Mansion at the end of these Spanish moss laden trees. Time has passed and this is now the much photographed entrance to Belfair. In a very short period of time the golf course and learning center have achieved world wide acclaim. I recently had the privilege of walking a few holes with Curtis Strange at the Grand Opening. Call me for a special preview of this private Plantation.

Rose Hill Plantation
If you are looking for a large home site where you can raise horses and have that open spaces feeling, Rose Hill is the place. Only six miles from the Island but it feels like a world away. When I first visited Rose Hill it stood by itself as a remote wildlife rich area. The critters and the beauty are still there but when you drive Rt 278 you will notice the managed growth that has caught up with this desirable Plantation. My favorite spot is the Rose Hill Plantation House and grounds that date back to the Civil War.
